Is Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo the Best Beer Shampoo on the Market?

Imagine this all-too-familiar scenario: you’re standing in the shampoo aisle at your local grocery store, overwhelmed by the number of options available. There are the name-brand Head and Shoulders or the well-marketed Old Spice. Soon enough, decision fatigue kicks in; you pick the next one off the shelf you see and end up disappointed the next time you shower. I’ve been there before, but thanks to Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo, I don’t think I’ll be there again.

See, I used to always use Dove Fresh and Clean Shampoo. I loved the smell, but my hair just felt kind-of meh after I showered. As I began my grooming journey, I realized just how many eco-friendly shampoo products were available, and I decided to permanently shift to a healthier, more environmentally friendly shampoo.

Which led me to Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo, one of my favorite men’s grooming gifts and the perfect stocking stuffer to receive from my wife. I had been talking about how amazing a craft beer shampoo would be, and right before the holidays, Rachel surprised me with a bottle of the shampoo. Needless to say, I was pumped. But did Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo live up to the hype in my head or fall short of my lofty expectations? Read my review below to find out.

What’s Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo?

The front page of Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo’s website boasts, “The best shampoo on the planet because real craft beer is perfect for the planet.” While braggadocious, Duffy’s Brew is one of only a few craft beer shampoos on the market. Whereas most store-bought shampoos are filled with chemicals, you can rest assured that Duffy’s Brew is literally made from beer (just make sure you read the label: “Beer tastes good. Shampoo does not.”).

Founded in Seattle and purchased by a Boston company, the company certainly leans into the college, beer-drinking attitude that many of their more marketed contemporaries live by. A visit to the Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo website is littered with drinking-references and a sarcastic tone towards men’s grooming.

This Boston-based company has the New England Patriots’ swagger or Red Sox and hopes to build a men’s grooming dynasty to live up to their city’s championship history.

Why should you trust me?

I’ve been using Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer shampoo for the last month every time I showered. There were showers where I came in with dry hair, others when I bathe with gross, stinky, sweaty hair. Sometimes after walking our dog in the rain, I even showered when my hair was already wet.

And while I’ve been quarantining, there haven’t been a lot of times for me to go out and do my hair, but I’ve made it a point for this review to add some hair gel or pomade every once in a while.

What do I mean by eco-friendly?

You’re going to read and hear about many organic, sustainable, and eco-friendly products on this website. When I score a product one through five based on it’s eco-friendliness, I am focusing on the following criteria:

Is it made from natural ingredients?

Simply put, are the ingredients in this product au natural? In shampoos, the key ingredients to be looking out for are sulfates, parabens, and dyes. Each of these ingredients can damage the environment by infiltrating water pipes or poisoning sewers.

Is the manufacturing of the product environmentally friendly?

Does the product come in an eco-friendly container, or are there conscious decisions made in producing the product to help protect the environment? This also includes manufacturing the product itself: what are the factory conditions like, and do employees receive a fair wage?

Was the product tested on animals?

This one’s pretty obvious. Are the products tested on animals, yes or no?

Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo Review

After my month’s usage of Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo, is it more like the 2019 Patriots or the Cam Newton led Pats? Well…I’d say it’s probably a bit more like the 2007 Patriots, a great product on the field that fumbles at the goal line (or I guess loses to Eli Manning, I don’t know if my metaphors are sticking right now). Normal Hair

Too oily, and your hair looks greasy. Too dry, and your hair is dull, brittle, or frizzy. I’ve experienced both ends of the spectrum with various off-the-shelf shampoo brands, but my hair trends towards being greasy rather than dry for this review. After using Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo, my hair didn’t dry out, nor did it get any greasier. It stayed about the same, close to just normal hair.

I also suffer from bouts of dandruff, but Duffy’s Brew really didn’t do much to help that out even though it claims to completely eliminate dandruff and dry scalp. One thing I noticed, though, pretty early on, was that my hair felt softer and smoother after use. While I wouldn’t say my hair is perfect after using this shampoo, I am walking away happier than I was with more traditional store-bought shampoos.

Hair Types Offered

Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo only offers one type of shampoo for all hairstyles. That being said, I don’t think it’s fair for me to give a rating because there’s no specificity on whether or not this shampoo is designed for all hair types.

Scent

But the smell, oh hell yeah. This is what I’m talking about. Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo might be the best smelling men’s shampoo I’ve ever used. I don’t know the best way to describe it other than rich mahogany mixed with masculine, woody musk. Seriously, dudes, this stuff smells incredible.

I noticed that it’s not really an issue for me because the smell doesn’t linger. I don’t walk out of the shower smelling like beer shampoo, or really anything. Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo does an excellent job of doing the work it needs to do, making your hair smell good in the shower, and then leaves it at that. If you’re looking for a great smelling men’s shampoo, definitely give Duffy’s Brew a shot.

Eco-friendly

I was pleasantly surprised when looking at Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo ingredients and realizing how eco-friendly it was. Made from fennel, aloe, acai, gogi, and sunflower, this shampoo utilizes plenty of natural ingredients. Add in the barley and malt for vitamin B, and hops, and yeast, and you have a safe-to-use men’s beer shampoo. I should note, though, that this shampoo is not 100% chemical-free: PEG-150 Distearate and a couple of other (deemed safe) chemicals are utilized in this particular shampoo. If you’re looking for something that’s 100% natural, then Duffy’s Brew Shampoo won’t be for you.

Another benefit is that Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo does not use any sulfates, parabens, and phthalates. No harsh preservatives, no dangerous plastics. Plus, there’s no testing on animals, which means a lot as well.

As for manufacturing, there isn’t a lot of information available about the creation of the product. I can tell you that the packaging is not eco-friendly, nor does it claim to be.

Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer shampoo does a lot right when it comes to eco-friendliness. Still, an unclear manufacturing process and the use of inorganic ingredients hold this shampoo back from being 100% eco-friendly.

Is Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo worth it?

After using Duffy’s Brew Craft Beer Shampoo for the last month or so, I’d say give it a shot. I’ve enjoyed my first experience with beer shampoo, but I should also note that I don’t have complicated hair. You can expect a great smelling shampoo that will do its job and do it well.

Just make sure you check out the ingredients before purchasing, and if you have a more specialized type of hair, take a look and see if there is an option more specific to your needs.
